This series analyses the complex correlations of identity, politics and potentialities in the northern border region of India.

Kalimpong, a small city in the Himalayas and part of the district Darjeeling in West Bengal, has a notable history, an interesting present and an unclear future.

The district is often viewed as geographically and culturally different within India. It evokes romantic images of an idyllic hill station. Nevertheless the region has been adversely affected by a less romantic reality.

The major problems nowadays however are the struggle for an own state within the Indian Union, namely “Gorkhaland”, with questions of economy, development and identity connected to it. Conceptualized as an interdisciplinary work, “Kalimpong Diaries” aims to make specific research from the area studies accessible to people from a wider audience as well as to depict the region from the view of an insider.
